On the afternoon of June 24, 2024, violence erupted in the Roanoke neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri, disrupting the usual quiet of the tree-lined streets. Around 2:30 p.m., officers from the Kansas City Police Department were dispatched to the Wise Owl Brick House Apartments located in the 1000 block of West 38th Street. Initially responding to reports of shots fired, the situation quickly escalated as law enforcement arrived at the scene.
Inside a common stairwell of the apartment building, they discovered a 57-year-old male, Wayne E. Gordon, suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical responders were summoned immediately but were unable to save him, pronouncing him dead at the scene.
Wayne E. Gordon, known affectionately to friends and family as 'Doggie,' was a dedicated family man who had built a life centered around his loved ones and his work. Born in June 1967, he had spent the last decade and a half working in facility maintenance and plumbing, a field he entered after receiving his GED and specialized certification. He was remembered for his love of fashion, his ability to make people laugh, and his passion for rehabilitating houses. Outside of work, he cherished time spent with his grandchildren and his two dogs, Bleu and Rhedd. He was survived by his mother, his common-law wife, and his children, leaving behind a community of lifelong friends and relatives who gathered to mourn his sudden loss.
Following the shooting, homicide detectives canvassed the neighborhood, knocking on doors and seeking witnesses in the close-knit community. While several individuals were nearby when the shots rang out, it remained unclear in the immediate aftermath if anyone had directly witnessed the killing. Police focused their efforts on reviewing surveillance footage from cameras mounted on telephone poles along the street. As of the initial reports, no suspects had been taken into custody, and the investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death remained active and ongoing.
