On July 28, 2023, at approximately 5 p.m., Kansas City police responded to reports of a shooting near the intersection of Roberts Street and Indiana Avenue in the Historic Northeast neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers discovered 58-year-old Manuel Valentine-Ruperto lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the chest. Emergency medical services pronounced him dead at the scene.
