In the late afternoon of a summer day in Kansas City, Missouri, a dispute over a recently purchased car escalated into a fatal encounter. Manuel E. Valentine-Ruperto, a 58-year-old man, was found shot and killed on a sidewalk in the 3400 block of Roberts Street on July 28, 2023. The events that led to his death began with the purchase of a white Ford Mustang convertible from a man named Jerry Plater.
Earlier that day, Valentine-Ruperto had driven his new car to a local liquor store.
While he was there, Plater, 59, reportedly arrived, took the keys from the Mustang, and left after yelling at Valentine-Ruperto. The conflict stemmed from an issue regarding the payment and title for the vehicle. Following this confrontation, Valentine-Ruperto got a ride to Plater's rental home on Roberts Street to address the matter.
Around 5 p.m., the argument between the two men intensified outside Plater's residence. A witness to the confrontation heard a loud gunshot and then saw Plater pointing a long gun at Valentine-Ruperto. When police officers were called to the scene, they discovered Valentine-Ruperto lying on his back on the sidewalk with a single gunshot wound to his chest. Emergency medical services arrived and pronounced him deceased at the scene. Investigators found a 12-gauge shotgun shell in the grass nearby.
During the investigation, police spoke with a person at the scene who mentioned Valentine-Ruperto was having problems with a man nicknamed 'Shorty' over the car deal. Officers noted a sticker with the name 'Shorty' on the door of Plater's house. An eyewitness later identified Jerry Plater from a photo lineup as the person who shot Valentine-Ruperto. Following the investigation, Plater was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. He was subsequently held in the Jackson County Detention Center.
