On January 12, 2018, forty-six-year-old Darrel L. Johnson was fatally injured following a violent confrontation at his residence in Robertsville, Missouri. Johnson had been living in a camper located in the 1200 block of Wardfield Road when the incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. Investigators determined that a disturbance broke out at the property, during which Johnson sustained a gunshot wound from a shotgun.
Emergency responders were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead as a result of the injuries.
Law enforcement officers from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, along with the Multi-County Narcotics and Violent Crime Unit, immediately launched an investigation into the homicide. Detectives pursued leads throughout the weekend that stretched across state lines. Their efforts coordinated with local authorities in Illinois eventually tracked a suspect to a location in Waterloo, Illinois. On the Sunday following the shooting, police apprehended twenty-four-year-old Wesley L. Tatom of Salem, Missouri, in the 300 block of Morrison Avenue in Waterloo.
Prosecutors initially charged Tatom with second-degree murder in connection with Johnson’s death, and a judge set his bond at $250,000, cash-only. The legal proceedings continued for several years, concluding in June 2024 when Tatom entered a guilty plea to a reduced charge of involuntary manslaughter. During an emotional sentencing hearing in August 2024, the court handed down a six-year suspended sentence, contingent upon Tatom’s successful completion of a shock incarceration program.
