In a Phoenix home on New Year's Day, a conversation about spiritual matters and the struggles of drug addiction took a fatal turn, leaving one man dead. Ryan Doka, a 36-year-old male, was shot and killed during the encounter. The incident led to the arrest of 29-year-old Alex Pineda, who was later booked on suspicion of second-degree murder.
The evening began with Pineda and Doka engaged in a deep discussion about spiritual healing and their personal battles with drug addiction. They were at Pineda's residence with some of his relatives at the time. According to police documents, the conversation escalated, at which point Pineda allegedly brandished a handgun and shot Doka as he sat on the couch. Doka was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following his arrest, Pineda admitted to authorities that he was a heroin user and had consumed marijuana, methamphetamine, and another drug prior to the shooting. Authorities have indicated that drug impairment is believed to have been a contributing factor in the tragic incident. Pineda was held on a $750,000 bond.
