On the evening of September 28, 2024, a fatal shooting occurred in Hazelwood, Missouri, involving a dispute during a child custody exchange. The victim, identified as 27-year-old male Shawn Lamont Freeman, had accompanied his sister to a residence on Ville Angela Lane to help her pick up her children. Freeman, who lived in the Spanish Lake area of St. Louis County, was reportedly present to act as a peacemaker due to known tensions between his sister and the children’s paternal grandmother.
Upon their arrival at the home, the situation escalated when Freeman’s sister engaged in a verbal argument with three women in the foyer, which quickly turned into a physical altercation.
During the chaotic struggle, Freeman attempted to intervene and separate the fighting parties. Witnesses reported that while he stood with his foot in the door, an infant was passed to him. Freeman then handed the baby to a friend who had accompanied them, instructing the friend to take the child to their vehicle. As the friend walked away with the infant and another young child who had exited the house, a single gunshot rang out. The friend turned to see Freeman collapse to the ground, shouting that he had been hit. Despite being rushed to Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital by his friend and sister, Freeman was pronounced dead at 9:16 p.m. from a gunshot wound to the chest.
Police arrested 44-year-old Quiarra Short at the scene. Short, who is the grandmother of the children involved in the transfer, admitted to investigators that she fired the shot. She claimed that Freeman and his sister were being aggressive and attempting to force their way into her home. Short stated that she was knocked into a stairwell banister during the commotion, which caused her to draw her weapon and fire in what she described as fear for her safety.
Following the investigation, the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Quiarra Short with second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. She was ordered held on a $500,000 cash-only bond. Court documents indicated that while Freeman was known to his family as a 'mediator type' who sought to diffuse the hostility, the confrontation tragically resulted in his death. A bond reduction hearing and a preliminary hearing were subsequently scheduled as the legal proceedings against Short commenced.
