On the evening of April 14, 2023, Daniel Garvin, a 46-year-old Black male from Trenton, New Jersey, was tragically killed. The events leading to his death began with an altercation that did not involve him. At approximately 8:21 p.m., Trenton Police were alerted to gunfire by a ShotSpotter activation for six rounds in the vicinity of 328 Rutherford Avenue.
When officers arrived, they discovered Garvin behind the residences at 330 and 332 Rutherford Avenue, suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was ultimately pronounced deceased.
The investigation into the shooting, conducted by the Mercer County Homicide Task Force and the Trenton Police Department, uncovered a sequence of events that led to the fatal shooting of an innocent bystander. Shortly before the shooting, a physical altercation occurred at a liquor store located at 210 Prospect Street between a younger male and 34-year-old Rasheed Funderburg of Trenton. The younger male fled the scene, running toward Rutherford Avenue, with Funderburg and several other individuals in pursuit.
As the chase continued, Funderburg was seen retrieving a handgun. He then fired several shots down an alleyway into which the younger male had fled. Daniel Garvin, who happened to be walking through that same alleyway, was struck three times by the gunfire. He was an uninvolved party in the initial conflict.
Following an investigation, Rasheed Funderburg was identified as the shooter. On April 26, 2023, he was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force. Funderburg has been charged with murder and various firearms offenses. The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office has since filed a motion to keep him detained pending his trial. Authorities have encouraged anyone with further information regarding the case to contact the Mercer County Homicide Task Force as the investigation continues.
