In the early morning hours of July 29, 2023, the life of 49-year-old Kimberly A. Hoffman, a Caucasian female from Little Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, was tragically cut short. Just after 5:00 a.m., a fearful Hoffman dialed 911, reporting that someone was attempting to break into her residence. Her call for help would be her last.

When officers from the Little Egg Harbor Township Police Department arrived at her home, they were met with a scene of horror. Inside, they discovered Kimberly Hoffman's body; she had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to her face. Alongside her lay her deceased dog, also a victim of gunfire. The perpetrator was identified as her 52-year-old ex-husband, Carl Schulz, Jr. He was found at the scene with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Though he was still alive when authorities arrived, he later succumbed to his injuries at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City.

The investigation conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office concluded that Schulz had forced his way into his ex-wife's home, shot her and her dog, and then turned the gun on himself in a tragic murder-suicide. The incident left the community in shock and Hoffman's two sons without their mother. Kimberly was remembered as a loving mother who was actively involved in her children's lives and worked as the admissions director at Seacrest Nursing Home. The case was closed following the death of the sole suspect, Carl Schulz, Jr., leaving behind a community to mourn the senseless loss.
