In the summer of 2024, a man from Atlanta named Perez Denis Martinez, died while in custody at the Clayton County Jail. He had been booked into the facility on June 1 on a charge of aggravated animal cruelty and was being held on a $4,000 bond.
Leading up to his death, Martinez experienced a series of medical incidents. On a Tuesday, he fainted and struck his head. After an examination by the medical staff, he was cleared to go back to his cell.
That same day, he underwent a psychological assessment after detention officers observed that he had been refusing to eat.
Two days later, on Thursday, Martinez had another medical emergency where he lost consciousness and again hit his head. Following this event, he was kept in the jail's infirmary overnight for observation.
The next day, during a routine headcount, Martinez was found to have fallen once more. He was transported to Southern Regional Hospital for emergency medical services, where he ultimately passed away. The Georgia Bureau of Investigations and the Clayton County Medical Examiner's Office are investigating the death. While initial reports from the sheriff's office indicate no signs of foul play, an autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause and manner of his death.
