In the early afternoon of October 4, 2024, a shooting at the Ramada by Wyndham hotel on Two Bridges Road in Fairfield, New Jersey, resulted in the death of 28-year-old Mohammad Sahariar Islam. Authorities received a 911 call about a disturbance at the hotel at approximately 12:27 p.m. Upon their arrival, Fairfield police discovered two male hotel employees with gunshot wounds.
Mohammad Sahariar, a resident of Fairfield, was found unresponsive in the manager's office and was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:35 p.m. The other victim, a co-worker of Sahariar's, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition after being shot in the chest. He survived the attack and later provided crucial information to investigators.
Initially, police assured the public that there was no active shooter and no further threat to the community.
The investigation, conducted by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force and the Fairfield Police Department, quickly identified a suspect. Based on information, including an account from the surviving victim identifying the shooter as a hotel guest from the previous night, authorities focused their search. On October 9, 2024, Tyrone Malcolm, a 39-year-old resident of Middletown, New York, was arrested at a residence in his hometown by members of the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force and detectives from the prosecutor's office.
Malcolm, who had been staying at the hotel with his girlfriend, was charged with murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Reports indicate that Sahariar and Malcolm did not know each other before the incident. Following his arrest, Malcolm was held in New York, awaiting extradition to New Jersey to face the charges against him.
