In the afternoon of January 11, 2023, tragedy struck in Portsmouth, Virginia, ending the life of 29-year-old Mikeous Markeem Freeman. The incident unfolded around 4:01 p.m. in the 3300 block of Turnpike Road, where police officers responded to a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Freeman, who had been fatally shot, and another man suffering from non-life-threatening injuries.
The second man was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Initially, the Portsmouth Police Department stated that they were not actively seeking any suspects in connection with the shooting. However, the investigation progressed, and three days later, on January 14, 2023, authorities announced an arrest. Twenty-six-year-old Kip Jones II was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder for his alleged involvement in Freeman's death. In addition to the murder charge, Jones also faced charges of shooting in the commission of a felony, use of a firearm, and shooting inside a building. Following his arrest, he was held at the Portsmouth City Jail.
Those who knew Mikeous Freeman, affectionately called 'Mike Mike,' remembered him as a kind, gentle, and humble man with a warm and engaging smile. A graduate of I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth, he was employed by Hiller Fire Protection Life Safety Company in Chesapeake, where he was a skilled installer of fire alarm systems. Known for his willingness to help others, Freeman often used his electrical skills to assist family and friends with various projects in their homes, churches, and businesses. His sudden and violent death left a deep void in the lives of his family, friends, and the wider community.
