In the early morning hours of a spring day, the life of 22-year-old D’angelo Marquise Gracy was tragically cut short. On April 15, 2023, Gracy was one of two individuals fatally shot at an off-campus house party in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The incident also claimed the life of a 17-year-old junior from Harrisonburg High School. Neither Gracy, who was from Rocky Mount, North Carolina, nor the teenager were students at James Madison University, near where the shooting took place at the Redpoint
apartment complex.
The shooting prompted a response from local law enforcement, who initiated an investigation into the double homicide. Despite their efforts, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and the case remains an unsolved act of gun violence. The Harrisonburg community, particularly the students of Harrisonburg High School, mourned the loss of the young high school student with a walkout to raise awareness about gun violence.
D'angelo Marquise Gracy, who also had connections to Raleigh, North Carolina, was remembered by his family and friends. His funeral services were held in Raleigh, and he was interred in Garner, North Carolina. The investigation into his and the other victim's death continues, leaving a somber note on the community as they await justice.
