In the early morning hours of April 29, 2023, the life of 18-year-old Jabari C. Smith, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Norfolk, Virginia. Around 4:50 a.m., police were called to the 1400 block of Norchester Avenue after a report of a gunshot victim. Upon arrival, they discovered Smith suffering from a gunshot wound, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators later determined that the actual shooting had taken place in the 3300 block of East Princess Anne Road.
Smith was a recent graduate of Hampton High School, having received his diploma in 2022. Known for his vibrant personality, he was a dedicated employee at the Peninsula Family Skating Center for four years and had recently started a new job as a welder at Huntington Ingalls Newport News Shipyard. He had aspirations of joining the Marines. Smith was also an active member of his community, serving as a junior usher and participating in the mime ministry at Tabernacle Baptist Church East End. He was a member of the skating group Mainstr33t Rollerz. Friends and family remember him as someone with an infectious smile who loved to make people laugh. He was also a supportive son, helping his mother who was battling breast cancer.
As of late 2024, the investigation into Jabari C. Smith's death is ongoing, but no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The lack of progress in the case has been a source of continued grief and frustration for his family, friends, and the wider community who continue to seek justice and closure for his untimely death. Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward.
