In the early morning hours of July 6, 2023, the life of 33-year-old Darrell Dante Morton was tragically cut short in a hail of gunfire near the Crater Square Apartments in Petersburg, Virginia. A lifelong resident of the city, Morton, known affectionately as 'Tae,' was a Black male born on June 26, 1990. He was a product of Petersburg Public Schools and was employed at Standard Motors in Prince George, Virginia. His life was characterized by a bright smile and a deep devotion to his children. He found joy in listening to rap music, spending cherished moments with his cousins and friends, and passionately following his favorite sports teams, the Washington Commanders and basketball superstar LeBron James.
The night he was killed, residents near the 1000 block of South Crater Road were startled by the sound of what some described as approximately 100 gunshots. When police responded to the reports just before 2 a.m., they discovered Morton's body at the scene. The area around the apartment complex was littered with evidence of the violent encounter, with investigators marking at least 50 evidence markers. The sheer number of shots fired painted a grim picture of the final moments of his life.
In the wake of the shooting, the Petersburg Police Department launched an investigation into Morton's death. Despite the violent nature of the crime and the extensive evidence collected at the scene, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects.
