In the early morning hours of a Sunday in South Boston, Virginia, the life of 25-year-old Quaheim N. Chandler, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On July 16, 2023, at the Willow Oaks Apartments, an altercation escalated to violence, resulting in Chandler suffering a single gunshot wound. He was quickly taken to Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts to save him, Chandler succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The South Boston Police Department promptly began a homicide investigation into the events that transpired in the rear parking area of the apartment complex on Poplar Creek Street. In the days that followed, a sidewalk memorial with balloons, candles, and chalk messages from children appeared at Willow Oaks, a testament to the community's grief for the young man's untimely death.
The investigation led authorities to identify a primary suspect in the fatal shooting. An arrest warrant was issued for Javante Jordan, who was described by police as 'armed and dangerous.' The charges against Jordan included second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. A search for the suspect was immediately launched.
Just over a week after the shooting, on July 24, 2023, the search for Javante Jordan came to an end. Law enforcement located and apprehended him at a residence on 9th Street in Altavista, Virginia. During the arrest, a search of the home revealed Jordan hiding in the attic, bringing a swift conclusion to the manhunt.
