On August 4, 2023, at approximately 2:17 p.m., Newport News Police responded to a reported shooting in the 400 block of Nelson Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered 31-year-old Kevin Hughes suffering from a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
