In the late summer evening of September 1, 2023, the life of 25-year-old Joshua Fieldings came to a tragic end in a parking lot in the Woodlawn area of Alexandria, Virginia. Fieldings, a man who was experiencing homelessness, had formed a connection with the family of 17-year-old Kareem Valentine. The Valentine family had offered him help, allowing him to use their home for showers, laundry, and meals, and even providing him with financial assistance through a CashApp card set up by Valentine's mother.
However, on that fateful Friday, the relationship soured dramatically. A dispute erupted between Fieldings and Valentine over the CashApp card, which Fieldings believed was locked. The argument escalated significantly when Fieldings allegedly threw a brick through the window of the Valentine family's home earlier in the day. Though law enforcement was called, no arrest was made at that time. The conflict, however, was far from over. It followed Valentine to his job at a local Dollar Tree in a shopping center on Sacramento Drive.
Later that evening, the simmering tensions boiled over. At approximately 8:20 p.m., as Fieldings exited a business in the shopping center, a single gunshot rang out. Witnesses reported seeing the 17-year-old fleeing the scene. Fairfax County Police responded to a call at 8:29 p.m. and found Joshua Fieldings with a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead.
Detectives worked swiftly through the night. Their investigation led them to Kareem Valentine, who was arrested at his home in Lorton late that same night. Police also recovered a firearm they believed was used in the shooting. Valentine was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and underage possession of a firearm. He was held without bond at the Fairfax County Juvenile Detention Center.
The case proceeded to a jury trial in Fairfax Circuit Court. During the trial, evidence was presented, including security footage that captured parts of the ongoing dispute. The defense argued that Valentine, who was 18 by the time of the trial, had acted in self-defense. They contended that in the final moments before the shooting, Fieldings was sprinting towards Valentine, who was seated in his car, prompting Valentine to fire the single shot to protect himself. After approximately six hours of deliberation, the jury returned its verdict. On June 7, 2024, Kareem Valentine was found not guilty of murder and the felony firearm use charge. He was, however, found guilty of a misdemeanor for being a juvenile in possession of a firearm.
