On a grim October day in Newport News, Virginia, the life of 39-year-old Quandrell Damone Williams was tragically cut short. The events that unfolded on October 15, 2023, would not only lead to his death ten days later but also bring to light a series of distressing circumstances surrounding the emergency response and a subsequent criminal trial. Williams, a Black male, was found with a gunshot wound to his head and, in a critical error, was initially declared deceased by the first responders
who arrived at the scene. He lay on a porch for nearly 40 minutes before it was realized he was still alive and then transported to a local hospital. He ultimately succumbed to his injuries on October 25, 2023.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of Lakavious Charity. During the murder trial, Charity claimed he acted in self-defense, asserting that Williams was attempting to break into the home where he was present. However, the prosecution countered this argument by highlighting that Williams was unarmed at the time of the incident. The trial concluded with a verdict that brought a complex mix of emotions for those involved, as Charity was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter, a lesser charge than the original second-degree murder accusation he faced.
In a separate but related development, the significant delay in medical care for Williams prompted legal action from his family against the city of Newport News. This led to a confidential settlement with his family.
