In the early hours of March 13, 2024, the life of 25-year-old Nikemeon Brewer of Portsmouth was tragically cut short. A Black male, Brewer was found by Norfolk Police around 1:00 a.m. in the 1700 block of Campostella Road, located within the Diggs Town Housing community, suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Following an investigation into the shooting,
authorities identified a suspect in the case. Thirty-two-year-old Kevin E. Hayes of Chesapeake was arrested in connection with Brewer's death. Hayes was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is currently being held without bond.
While detectives have not released further details regarding the circumstances that led to the shooting, the aftermath has left a profound impact on Brewer's family. In the wake of this tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was initiated to help with funeral expenses. The fundraiser brought to light the significant responsibilities of Brewer's brother, Jermel, a Navy sailor who had recently taken custody of his ten younger adopted siblings. The community has been called upon to offer support to the grieving family during this incredibly difficult time.
