On a Sunday afternoon in Danville, Virginia, a disagreement between two men sharing a residence escalated into a fatal act of violence. On March 31, 2024, Quayshawn Malik Witherspoon, a 32-year-old Black male, was shot multiple times inside a home in the 600 block of Fairhaven Circle. The Danville Police Department responded to the scene at approximately 1:20 p.m.
and found Witherspoon with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man responsible for the shooting, 33-year-old Louis Sirach Garnett III, was present at the residence when officers arrived and was taken into custody without incident. Investigators determined that the shooting was the result of a dispute between the two housemates and that it was an isolated incident with no other individuals involved. Garnett was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was held at the Danville City Jail without bond.
In the months following the shooting, the case proceeded through the legal system. Louis Garnett III ultimately pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree murder. On January 28, 2025, a Danville court sentenced Garnett to 28 years in prison for the shooting death of Quayshawn Witherspoon. This sentence brought a legal conclusion to the tragic and sudden end of a life that began in New York City and was mourned by his parents, children, and siblings.
