On March 21, 2023, in Sumter, South Carolina, Command Sergeant Major Carlos Evans, aged 38, was tragically killed in a shooting incident that also claimed the lives of three children. The assailant, identified as 42-year-old former soldier and civilian Army employee Charles Slacks Jr., subsequently took his own life.
