In the quiet evening of Sunday, March 26, 2023, the life of 25-year-old Wynter Nicole Straw was tragically cut short in what authorities would later describe as a domestic violence homicide. A graduate of Columbia High School and Allen University, Wynter was a beloved figure in her community, remembered for her academic achievements and her prowess on the volleyball and basketball courts.
She had dedicated her career to helping others, working as a mental health officer at the South Carolina Department of Corrections' Broad River Secure Facility.
On that fateful evening, deputies from the Richland County Sheriff's Department were dispatched to an apartment complex on Mallet Hill Road in Columbia, South Carolina, following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival at approximately 6 p.m., they discovered Wynter's body outside one of the apartment buildings; she had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The man suspected of ending her life, 27-year-old Renardo S. Johnson, with whom she was in a romantic relationship, had barricaded himself inside a nearby apartment, leading to a tense, hours-long standoff with law enforcement.
For nearly three hours, negotiators attempted to communicate with Johnson, hoping for a peaceful resolution. However, all communication ceased, and a short time later, a single gunshot was heard from within the apartment. When deputies made entry, they found Johnson with a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries later that night.
The tragic event has been classified as a murder-suicide, leaving two families and a community to grapple with the devastating consequences of domestic violence.
