In March of 1972, in Columbia, South Carolina, a 23-year-old African-American woman named Beatrice Anderson Riley was settling into a new life. A recent graduate of Benedict College with aspirations of a career in social services, she had married the love of her life, Arthur, and had just begun her first professional job.
