The incident, which the local coroner swiftly ruled a homicide, occurred on May 25, 2023. Kelly was discovered inside his vehicle at the Pine Grove Apartment complex located on Foxfire Drive, having sustained a single gunshot wound to the head.
The investigation into the death of Gary Anthony Kelly II led authorities to
24-year-old Tyrese Shavon Madison. Investigators believe that the shooting transpired while both Kelly and Madison were seated in the front of Kelly's car. Following the incident, detectives determined that Madison had taken some of Kelly's property and had attempted to destroy it. This finding proved to be a critical piece of evidence in the unfolding investigation.
Just a day after the shooting, on Friday, May 26, 2023, deputies with the Lexington County Sheriff's Department apprehended Tyrese Shavon Madison at his residence within the same Pine Grove apartment complex where the shooting took place. Madison was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. In addition to these serious charges, he also faced charges related to drugs that were in his possession at the time of his arrest. Following his arrest, Madison was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center, where he was held after being denied bond.
