A simmering case of road rage at a South Carolina intersection escalated into a fatal confrontation, leaving a 46-year-old man dead from a gunshot wound to the chest. The male victim, Kevin Wain Neese of Anderson, was pronounced dead at a local hospital following the altercation on June 26, 2023. The incident unfolded at the intersection of Belleview Drive and Concord Avenue in Anderson.
According to the Anderson County Coroner's Office, Neese was involved in an altercation with another
individual at the intersection when he was shot. An initial investigation by the coroner's office ruled his death a homicide. Reports from the time indicated that a suspect was detained at the scene for questioning.
Following an investigation into the fatal shooting, the Anderson Police Department and the 10th Judicial Circuit Solicitor's Office determined that the shooting was a case of self-defense. It was concluded that Neese was the primary aggressor in the road rage incident. The solicitor's office reported that Neese initiated the confrontation by exiting his vehicle and physically assaulting the other driver, who remained in his car.
The investigation found that the shooter, who possessed a valid concealed weapons permit, acted lawfully under South Carolina's 'stand your ground' law. As a result of these findings, no charges were filed against the individual who shot Neese, and the case was officially closed, with the determination that the homicide was justified.
