In the summer of 2023, the life of 18-year-old Jamari Jashon Shields was tragically cut short on a Sunday afternoon in Columbia, South Carolina. On July 9th, at approximately 2:30 p.m., police were called to the 1600 block of Ogden Street, near the intersection with Two Notch Road, following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers discovered the young male with a gunshot wound to his upper body.
A responding officer immediately administered first aid, applying a tourniquet from a city-issued medical kit in an effort to stop the bleeding before emergency medical services arrived. Shields was then rushed to a local hospital, but despite the efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting, led by the Columbia Police Department, quickly pointed to a violent encounter that appeared to stem from a planned meeting. Investigators believe that Shields had arranged to meet with two other teenagers, 19-year-old Willie Lee Carter III and a 16-year-old whose name was not publicly released due to his age. It is alleged that during this meeting, Carter and his younger accomplice stole a firearm from Shields. Moments after the robbery, the fatal shot was fired.
Within a day of the shooting, the Columbia Police Department announced the arrests of both suspects. Willie Lee Carter III was charged with murder, armed robbery, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, transfer of a pistol to a person under 18, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. His 16-year-old alleged accomplice faced a similar slate of serious charges, including murder, armed robbery, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, unlawful carrying of a pistol, and possession of a pistol by a person under the age of 18. Following their arrests, both individuals were booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center to await legal proceedings.
