On August 15, 2023, 23-year-old Summerville resident, Hunter Keith Baum, was found in his vehicle on Nexton Parkway near I-26 with a gunshot wound to his left temple. Deputies responded to a call around 1:35 a.m. reporting an SUV off the road with an unconscious male inside and a possible bullet hole in the vehicle. Baum was transported to the Medical University of South Carolina, where he fought for his life for seven days before succumbing to his injuries on August 21.
