In the summer of 2018, the life of 19-year-old Chandler Ari Dunmeyer of Summerville, South Carolina, came to a tragic end. On Sunday, August 5, 2018, Dunmeyer died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his mother's home. His mother discovered him after hearing the shot. At the time of his death, Dunmeyer, a male, was out on a $50,000 bond and awaiting trial for a serious crime.
Earlier that year, on January 22, 2018, 20-year-old Colee Muirhead was found shot to death in a room at the
Beachcomber Ocean Front Inn in Myrtle Beach. Investigations led by the Myrtle Beach Police Department quickly identified Dunmeyer as a suspect. Surveillance footage captured a man matching his description entering and leaving Muirhead's room, and no one else was seen entering before her body was discovered. Police determined that Dunmeyer and Muirhead had been in communication and had arranged to meet at the hotel, where a disagreement over money is believed to have occurred.
Dunmeyer, who was a private in the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, was arrested with the help of military authorities and the Fayetteville Police Department. He was charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. According to law enforcement, Dunmeyer confessed to his role in the killing.
After his arrest, Dunmeyer was initially granted bond with the condition that he be released into military custody. However, his release conditions were later modified to allow him to live with relatives in Dorchester County. He was administratively separated from the Army in June 2018. It was while living with his mother under these bond conditions that he took his own life, bringing a somber and unexpected end to the legal proceedings against him. The case left two families grieving the loss of their young loved ones.
