In a tragic turn of events, 18-year-old Kenyon Johnson, a male from Goose Creek, South Carolina, lost his life following a shooting in the Sangaree area of Berkeley County. The incident, which unfolded on the evening of March 1, 2022, also claimed the life of 15-year-old Malaki Trayvion Mazyck of Summerville. Both victims were shot in the parking lot of the Sangaree branch of the Berkeley County Library.
Following the shooting, both Johnson and Mazyck were rushed to the Brighton Park
Emergency Room. Mazyck was pronounced dead upon arrival. Johnson fought for his life but ultimately succumbed to his injuries the following morning, on March 2, 2022. The Berkeley County Coroner's Office later officially identified both teenagers as the victims of the fatal shooting. The community was left in shock by the violent loss of two young lives.
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to a 17-year-old suspect. The U.S. Marshals Service's Florida Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended the unnamed teenager at a resort in Orlando, Florida. Due to his age, his identity was not publicly released. The suspect is facing serious charges, including two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime. It is expected that he will be tried as an adult for his alleged role in the deaths of Kenyon Johnson and Malaki Mazyck. The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the circumstances that led to the deadly encounter.
