Caroline Marie Hall, a 30-year-old White woman, was killed in her Spartanburg, South Carolina, home in early 2024. Her date of death was February 2.
On the evening of Saturday, February 3, 2024, authorities were called to conduct a welfare check at a residence on Triple Crown Way around 6:50 p.m. Inside the home, they discovered Hall deceased.
An autopsy would later confirm she had been fatally shot in the head.
Investigators at the scene quickly identified a person of interest as 37-year-old Juan Canino Tobon, who was in a relationship with Hall. Authorities learned that Tobon had fled to New York shortly after the killing and initiated a search for him.
With assistance from the United States Marshal’s Service, Tobon was located and apprehended in New York on February 8. He was in possession of two handguns at the time of his arrest, which resulted in charges in that state. The New York charges had to be resolved before he could be returned to South Carolina to face charges for Hall's death.
On March 21, 2024, Tobon was extradited and booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Center. He was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. A magistrate judge denied him bond the next day. The case proceeded to trial, where a jury convicted Juan Canino Tobon of both the murder and weapons charges. He was sentenced to 55 years in prison. At the time of his arrest, a motive for the murder remained under investigation.
