In the quiet town of Heath Springs, South Carolina, a sense of unease settled over the community in early March 2024. Harriett Ann Mahaffey, a 65-year-old woman, was found deceased in her home on Stewart Place on March 4, 2024. A concerned family member, unable to reach her for several days, made the grim discovery. The front door of her residence was unlocked, and inside, the scene told a story of violence.
Mahaffey had been shot multiple times, and investigators would later recover eleven shell casings near her body.
As law enforcement began their investigation into the 'horrific crime,' they soon realized that Mahaffey's white 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee was missing from her home. This critical piece of information provided investigators with their first major lead. The vehicle was subsequently spotted in Chester, South Carolina, and the Charlotte region, which led authorities to a person of interest.
The investigation quickly centered on a 23-year-old neighbor, Lloyd Caldwell Jr. He was located and apprehended in Chester County, where authorities also recovered Mahaffey's stolen Jeep. Evidence gathered during the investigation further connected Caldwell to the crime. While a definitive motive has not been established, law enforcement has characterized the killing as a 'crime of opportunity' with 'no logical explanation.' There were no signs of forced entry into Mahaffey's home.
Lloyd Caldwell Jr. was arrested and faced a series of serious charges, including murder, first-degree burglary, grand larceny of more than $2,000, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. He was booked into the Lancaster County Detention Center and denied bond.
