In the early morning hours of Sunday, April 28, 2024, the life of 23-year-old Rodney McKensey James Jr. was tragically cut short. The male victim, a resident of Wagener, South Carolina, was fatally shot multiple times in the parking lot of Amici Tavern located on Savannah Highway in the Swansea area of Lexington County. The incident unfolded at approximately 3:20 a.m.
when deputies responded to a report of a shooting at the bar.
According to witness statements provided to investigators, the shooting was preceded by an argument between James and another man inside the tavern. The disagreement escalated and moved outside into the parking lot, where the other man shot James. Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in an unknown vehicle. Friends of James drove him a short distance down the road to meet with emergency medical services. He was then transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead from multiple gunshot wounds.
As of late May 2024, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting, and the Lexington County Sheriff's Department's investigation is ongoing. His obituary described him as someone who enjoyed cooking out at family events, helping others, and racing cars. He was remembered for his love of get-togethers, dancing, and talking with family and friends.
