Assistant Chief of Police David L. McIver of the Swansea Police Department in South Carolina tragically lost his life on June 7, 1979. The incident occurred when McIver, aged 47, responded to a one-vehicle accident he witnessed while at a service station. The vehicle, which had been speeding, crashed into a roadside ditch. Unbeknownst to McIver, the four occupants of the vehicle had earlier committed a robbery.
