In the late evening of May 7, 2024, the life of 38-year-old Derrick Jermaine Rollerson Sr. was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire on Johnson Street, nestled between America and Hanover Streets in Charleston, South Carolina. The male victim was discovered by officers from the Charleston Police Department who were responding to reports of a shooting at approximately 9:47 p.m.
At the scene, they found Rollerson and another man, 34-year-old Rashaad Vernon Simmons, both having succumbed to fatal gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to a suspect. Altonio Lamont Prioleau, 37 years old at the time of his arrest, was taken into custody in connection with the deaths of Rollerson and Simmons. The Charleston Police Department charged Prioleau with two counts of murder, reflecting the two lives lost that night. In addition to the murder charges, Prioleau also faced one count of attempted murder and a charge for possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
Following his arrest, Altonio Lamont Prioleau was booked into the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center. He was held there as he awaited a bond hearing to determine if he would be released from custody while the legal proceedings against him moved forward. The Charleston Police Department has continued its investigation into the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting, encouraging anyone with additional information to come forward and speak with detectives. Anonymous tips were also solicited through Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry.
