Death by Force

On May 20, 2024, 59-year-old Blaine Alan Varner, a physician assistant from Sumter, South Carolina, was fatally struck by stray gunfire during a shootout between two vehicles on North Purdy Street near Broad Street. Varner, an uninvolved motorist, was driving through the area when he was caught in the crossfire. He was transported to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on May 21.
