In the late evening hours in Gaston, South Carolina, a dispute between two men escalated, leaving one man dead from a gunshot wound to his upper body. The victim was identified as 53-year-old John Darrick Rumph, a male resident of the community. The incident, which unfolded outside of Rumph's home on Glenn Road, brought a swift response from law enforcement.
Investigators from the Lexington County Sheriff's Department quickly began piecing together the events of that Tuesday.
Through interviews with witnesses, they learned that the shooting stemmed from an earlier altercation that day between Rumph and another man. This initial confrontation seemingly set the stage for the deadly encounter that followed.
The investigation pointed to 34-year-old Johnnie Quawnetel Mack of Columbia as the primary suspect. According to authorities, Mack returned to Rumph's residence later that evening and fired multiple shots, striking Rumph once. The Lexington County Coroner's Office pronounced Rumph dead at the scene.
A few days later, Johnnie Quawnetel Mack turned himself in to law enforcement. He was subsequently arrested and charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. A magistrate judge denied him bond, and he is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center.
