In the summer of 2024, on the Fourth of July, the life of 17-year-old Dives Evans was tragically cut short in Columbia, South Carolina. The young man, a student at Kenning High School in Richland County, was known for his kind nature, his unconditional love for his family and friends, and an infectious smile that could light up a room. He possessed a creative spirit, with a gift for making music and a passion for drawing.
The fatal incident occurred at the Woodland Terrace Apartments on
South Beltline Boulevard. According to the Columbia Police Department, the shooting stemmed from an argument between acquaintances. When officers arrived at the scene, they found an injured male, who was then transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The Richland County Coroner's Office later identified the victim as Dives Evans.
In the days following the shooting, law enforcement identified a 16-year-old male as the suspect. The teenager, whose name has not been publicly released due to his age, surrendered to authorities in Bibb County, Georgia. He is facing charges of murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession of a weapon by a person under 18. Following his arrest, he awaited extradition back to South Carolina to face the charges. Police have described the shooting as an isolated incident.
Dives was born on March 12, 2007, in Sumter, South Carolina. His passing has left a void in the hearts of his family and friends, who remember him for the precious memories and laughter he brought into their lives. His family held a celebration of his life and he was laid to rest at Bradford Cemetery in Sumter. A little over a month after his death, his mother, Victoria Evans, also passed away.
