On December 22, 2017, the life of a 30-year-old Black male named James K. Copeland III came to a tragic end following a violent alteration in Columbia, South Carolina. The incident unfolded during the early morning hours at a McDonald's restaurant located on Parklane Road, a commercial corridor in the northeastern part of the city. Copeland, who was reportedly from Cumming, Georgia, had been at the establishment when a dispute began between him and another individual.
The confrontation
originated inside the fast-food restaurant but quickly escalated and spilled out into the parking lot. As the argument intensified, the situation turned deadly when a firearm was introduced. Copeland sustained a gunshot wound to the upper torso during the exchange. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting was reported around 4:00 a.m. and transported him to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead just before 5:00 a.m. that same morning.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts later confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, investigators with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department worked to piece together the events that led to the homicide. Authorities acted quickly, and reports confirmed that one person was taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting later that Friday.
