In the late hours of a Thursday night in Ridgeland, South Carolina, a long-standing feud reached its tragic conclusion, leaving a young man dead and another facing a murder charge. On November 7, 2024, at approximately 11:20 p.m., 21-year-old Rodney Lloyd Jr., a Black male, was involved in a heated argument at an Enmarket gas station on East Main Street.
The verbal confrontation quickly escalated into violence, shattering the night's calm with the sound of over 20 gunshots.
The dispute was with another 21-year-old Ridgeland resident, Nylon Chaney. As the argument intensified, both men reportedly drew pistols. In the ensuing shootout, Lloyd was struck by gunfire multiple times. Emergency responders were called to the scene at around 11:23 p.m., but Lloyd’s injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The confrontation was reportedly fueled by a feud that had been ongoing for several years between the two men.
Within an hour of the fatal shooting, Nylon Chaney turned himself in to the Ridgeland Police Department. He was arrested and subsequently charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Chaney was taken into custody at the Jasper County Detention Center to await a bond hearing, as the severity of the murder charge requires a circuit court judge to set bond. The investigation into the shooting continues as the community mourns the loss of a young life.
