In the late hours of a Monday in Jackson, Mississippi, the life of 38-year-old Elvin McKinley Levy, a Black/African American male, was violently cut short. On February 13, 2023, while at the intersection of Medgar Evers Boulevard and Ridgeway Street, Levy was confronted by three individuals who attempted to carjack his white Infiniti. During the ensuing struggle, a firearm was discharged, and Levy was struck in the chest. Despite his grievous injury, he managed to get the attention of nearby police officers. He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but the severity of the gunshot wound proved to be fatal, and he succumbed to his injuries.
The Jackson Police Department launched an immediate and thorough investigation into the homicide. Their efforts led them to a residence in the 3600 block of Wabash Street just four days later, on February 17, 2023. There, they apprehended three suspects in connection with the fatal shooting and carjacking attempt. The individuals taken into custody were identified as 19-year-old Jayden Tillis, 15-year-old De'Andre Brown, and 14-year-old Jamori Thompson. The arrests brought a swift, though not final, development to a case that had shocked the local community, highlighting concerns over violent crime and the involvement of youth.
Following their arrests, the three teenagers faced a litany of serious charges.
