On February 15, 2023, Capitol Police in Jackson, Mississippi, responded to reports of a shooting on Taylor Street. At the scene, near the intersection with West Street, they discovered Joseph Reddix, a 34-year-old Black man, deceased inside his white Lexus. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Friends and family remembered Reddix, an alumnus of Morehouse College and St.
Joseph Catholic School, as a loving person who never met a stranger.
Investigators determined that Reddix was in the driver's seat when he was shot. He was found slumped over with his foot still on the accelerator. Police believed a disturbance had occurred just before the shooting, and a vehicle that was stolen from the scene was quickly recovered nearby by officers. The Hinds County District Attorney’s Office would later reveal that Reddix had been shot seven times, with five bullets striking him in the back after traveling through the car seat.
The Capitol Police investigation quickly identified two suspects. Within a week of the shooting, officers arrested Kenneth Gross, 35, in connection with the murder. The second suspect, LaMarkus Moore, was identified but remained at large. Authorities asked for the public’s help in locating him, releasing his name and the contact number for the Capitol Police.
Moore was eventually apprehended, and his case proceeded to trial. Prosecutors from the Hinds County District Attorney’s Office presented evidence showing Moore had hunted Reddix down and fired the fatal shots. In October 2026, a jury found LaMarkus Moore, then 37, guilty of first-degree murder for the death of Joseph Reddix.
Following the conviction, Hinds County Circuit Judge Adrienne Wooten sentenced Moore to life in prison. As of October 2026, the case against his co-defendant, Kenneth Gross, is still awaiting trial.
