In the spring of 2023, just weeks before he was set to graduate, the life of 18-year-old William Dewayne Ransburgh, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On the first of May, in Jackson, Mississippi, the Forest Hill High School senior was shot and killed. The promising young man, who was born on April 10, 2005, to William Silas and Ravon Ransburgh, passed away in the same city where he was born.
The loss of William Dewayne Ransburgh was deeply felt by his community, particularly at his
high school where he was mourned alongside another senior, Gabriel Warren, who had also recently lost his life to gun violence. In a poignant tribute during a senior class celebration, Forest Hill High School honored the memory of both students. The school also planned to present their families with their diplomas during the graduation ceremony on May 31, 2023.
Funeral services to celebrate the life of William were held on May 13, 2023, at the Westhaven Funeral Home Chapel in Jackson. He was later laid to rest at Autumn Woods Memorial Gardens. As the community grieved, the Jackson Police Department continued its investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. To date, there have been no public reports of any arrests made or suspects identified in connection with the shooting. The case remains an open investigation as authorities continue to seek answers in the untimely death of William Dewayne Ransburgh.
