The community of Mound Bayou, Mississippi, was shaken by the violent death of 33-year-old Arthur B. Cole, affectionately known as "Bj," who passed away on September 24, 2023. A Black male and resident of the historic Delta town, Cole’s life was cut short following a shooting incident that prompted a joint investigation by local law enforcement agencies.
The circumstances surrounding his death involved gunfire directed at a residence, a dangerous event that ultimately led to his fatal injuries.
Authorities from the Mound Bayou Police Department and the Bolivar County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of the shooting, which reportedly occurred late in the evening at a property on Frances Street. Investigators discovered numerous shell casings—reports indicate more than 40—scattered across the area, evidence of the intensity of the attack. The gunfire not only struck the home but also damaged a vehicle parked at a nearby apartment complex. Cole was a victim of this violence, succumbing to his wounds days later on the 24th of September.
In the wake of the shooting, law enforcement officers moved quickly to identify those responsible. The investigation led to the arrest of Tafaris Townsend, a 22-year-old man from Cleveland, Mississippi. Townsend was taken into custody and charged with shooting into an occupied dwelling, a felony offense connected to the incident. He was subsequently held at the Bolivar County Regional Correctional Facility with a bond set at $50,000.
Detectives also identified a second individual, Tailan Lewis, a 21-year-old from Beulah, as a suspect wanted in connection with the case. Law enforcement issued public appeals for information regarding Lewis's whereabouts, urging community members to contact the Bolivar County Sheriff's Office or Crime Stoppers with any leads. The investigation remained active as officials sought to bring all parties involved in the events leading to Cole's death to justice.
