In the winter of 2024, the community of Greenwood, Mississippi, was shaken by the tragic death of 35-year-old Jessica McClain. On the evening of January 14th, police responded to a call reporting a shooting at an apartment on Roosevelt Drive. Upon arrival, they discovered McClain inside her residence with at least one gunshot wound.
The primary suspect in the shooting was identified as 30-year-old Lavorris Gilbert, who lived with McClain.
He was taken into custody shortly after the incident. Initially, Gilbert was charged with aggravated assault. However, following the release of findings from the Mississippi Crime Lab, the charges against him were upgraded to murder. A bond was set at $1 million. The death of Jessica McClain prompted community discussions about the serious issue of domestic violence and the need for greater resources and support for its victims.
The legal proceedings that followed brought some measure of closure to the case. In April 2024, a Leflore County Grand Jury indicted Gilbert for First Degree Murder, which included a firearm enhancement. As a jury trial was approaching, Gilbert opted to plead guilty to the lesser charge of Second-Degree Murder. On August 18, 2025, before a Leflore County Circuit Court Judge, Lavorris Gilbert officially entered his guilty plea for the murder of his longtime girlfriend, Jessica McClain.
Following his plea, Gilbert was sentenced to forty years, with thirty of those years to be served in the Mississippi Department of Corrections. The remaining ten years of his sentence were suspended, contingent upon his successful completion of five years of supervised probation after his release. The swift response of the Greenwood Police Department, which led to Gilbert's immediate apprehension and the recovery of the murder weapon, was acknowledged by the Assistant District Attorney who prosecuted the case.
