In the late hours of February 6, 2024, Christopher Ivory, an 18-year-old Black male, was killed in what authorities described as an apparent ambush just outside the city limits of Indianola, Mississippi. A recent graduate of Gentry High School, Ivory was known by his classmates for his energetic, funny, and humble nature. Friends recalled his ability to bring laughter even in the most serious of moments.
The fatal incident occurred around 9:47 p.m. near the intersection of Brickyard Road and US-82. Ivory was a passenger in a car that had stopped at a stop sign when another vehicle pulled alongside and one or more occupants began shooting into their car. The Sunflower County Sheriff suggested that more than one weapon was involved and that the firearm used was likely a pistol modified with a 'switch,' enabling it to fire rapidly. Ivory was struck multiple times by the gunfire.
Following the assault, the driver of the car Ivory was in managed to drive back into the Indianola city limits, where a call was made to 911. When Indianola Police arrived, they discovered Christopher Ivory deceased in the passenger seat. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist with the ongoing case. Despite the efforts of law enforcement and public appeals for information, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the shooting. The investigation into the death of Christopher Ivory remains open as authorities continue to seek leads to find those responsible for his death.
