In the early morning hours of Christmas Eve 2019, tragedy struck in Indianola, Mississippi, ending the life of 17-year-old Aquavious Hines. Hines, a Black male, was fatally shot near Roosevelt Street and Pershing Avenue. In the immediate aftermath, a friend rushed him to South Sunflower County Hospital, but the gunshot wounds were too severe, and he was pronounced dead. His death marked the sixth homicide in Indianola that year.
The Indianola Police Department began an investigation, and though initially no motive was clear and no warrants were issued, they sought two persons of interest. The day after the shooting, on Christmas Day, a suspect turned himself in to the authorities. Stedarrish Herman of Moorhead surrendered to the Moorhead Police Chief, who then transported him to the Indianola Police Department.
Stedarrish Herman, who was 16 years old at the time of the incident, was charged as an adult with manslaughter in connection with the death of Aquavious Hines.
