In the early hours of a summer morning in Indianola, Mississippi, the life of 19-year-old Cameron Lee Butts was tragically cut short. On July 21, 2024, Butts, a Black male from Greenville, was fatally shot in a mass shooting that erupted on Church Street. The incident, which took place around 1 a.m. near a nightclub, also claimed the lives of two other 19-year-olds, Areon Butler of Indianola and Marquette Baites of Greenville.
A large crowd had gathered in the area when dozens of gunshots suddenly rang out. In the ensuing chaos, in addition to the three fatalities, at least 19 other individuals were wounded, suffering injuries from direct gunfire and ricocheting bullets. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing a barrage of shots, creating a scene of panic and terror.
In the immediate aftermath, the Indianola Police Department, with assistance from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, launched a full-scale investigation into the deadly shooting. Despite numerous witnesses being present, authorities reported that no solid leads on the perpetrators or a motive for the attack were immediately available. Indianola Police Chief Ronald Sampson stated that while several people confirmed they were outside when the shooting began, no one had provided concrete information to move the investigation forward.
As of the latest available reports, no arrests have been made in connection with the mass shooting, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The case remains an active and ongoing investigation. In response to the tragedy, Indianola Mayor Ken Featherstone expressed his deep sorrow for the victims and their families and announced plans for a candlelight vigil to unite the grieving community.
