In the early morning hours of Sunday, July 21, 2024, the city of Indianola, Mississippi, was shattered by an eruption of gunfire that claimed the life of 19-year-old Areon Butler. A recent graduate of Gentry High School's Class of 2024, Butler was among a large crowd gathered near a nightclub on Church Street when the shooting began shortly after midnight. He was pronounced dead at the scene, his life cut tragically short in a hail of bullets.
