In the spring of 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace of a city park in Holly Springs, Mississippi, leaving a young man dead and a community in shock. Jaquavion Markell-Bell, a 21-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on the evening of April 19, 2024. The incident occurred at a park located at College Street and North Boundary, where witnesses reported seeing a man firing a rifle towards a crowd. First responders were alerted by a 911 call about shots fired at approximately 9:05 p.m.
Upon arrival at the scene in the area of Henley Park, law enforcement and emergency personnel discovered spent shell casings and blood in the street, but the victim was not present. Shortly after, a local hospital informed the Marshall County Coroner that a male with gunshot wounds had been brought to the emergency room in a private vehicle and had succumbed to his injuries. The coroner later identified the deceased as Jaquavion Markell-Bell of Holly Springs. An examination revealed at least two gunshot wounds to his abdomen. At the scene of the shooting, investigators recovered over 30 shell casings.
In the days following the deadly shooting, the Holly Springs Police Department identified persons of interest. An investigation led to an arrest warrant for first-degree murder being issued on April 24 for 20-year-old Markavis Sanders of Fayette County, Tennessee. The U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force took up the search for Sanders on May 1. The investigation led them to Memphis, Tennessee.
On May 10, 2024, a collaborative effort between U.S. Marshals from Mississippi and Tennessee, along with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Memphis Police Department, resulted in the capture of Markavis Sanders at a residence in Memphis. He was taken into custody without incident and was awaiting extradition back to Mississippi to face a murder charge for his alleged role in the death of Jaquavion Markell-Bell.
