In the quiet town of Holly Springs, Mississippi, the life of a young woman was tragically cut short in a hail of gunfire. Jametris Moore, a 23-year-old Black female, was killed on October 17, 2019, in a drive-by shooting at her home on Moss Street. The incident, which erupted from a larger altercation outside the residence, sent shockwaves through the community. According to the Marshall County coroner, Moore was struck in the neck by a bullet and succumbed to her injuries before she could be transported to a hospital. The shooting also left two other individuals wounded.
The investigation into the violent death of Jemetris Moore led Holly Springs police to three suspects. Ahmad Gatewood, then 21, Jeremy Young, 31, and Javion Boxley, 20, were arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. The charges brought against the trio were extensive and reflected the severity of the crime. Gatewood was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of a weapon by a felon, and shooting into a dwelling. Young and Boxley faced similar charges.
Following their arrests, all three men were held on a bond of $2.7 million each. One of the suspects, Jeremy Young, was among those injured during the melee and was taken into custody after his release from the hospital. The arrests brought a small measure of solace to a community grieving the senseless loss of a young life, as the Holly Springs Police Department worked to bring justice for Jemetris Moore and her family.
