On the evening of May 2, 2024, in Centreville, Mississippi, Jerome G. Young, a 39-year-old Black male, was fatally shot while sitting in his white BMW. The incident occurred at approximately 8 p.m. outside a Chevron convenience store located at 1290 Mississippi Highway 24 East. Young, whose address has also been listed in Biloxi, was ambushed in a sudden and violent attack that also endangered the public.
Witnesses reported that a four-door Audi occupied by multiple individuals pulled up
behind Young's parked vehicle. Without warning, the occupants of the Audi opened fire, unleashing a barrage of bullets that riddled the white BMW. The hail of gunfire not only struck Young multiple times but also hit the nearby B-Kwik convenience store, shattering the glass of its storefront. Miraculously, no one else was injured during the shooting. First responders arrived at the scene, but Jerome G. Young was pronounced dead.
In the days that followed the deadly shooting, the investigation led authorities to a related incident within Centreville. On May 6, police received reports of more gunfire near Cosby and Highland Streets. Witnesses in that area identified a white BMW and a red Cadillac Escalade as being involved. Shortly after this second shooting, the Cadillac Escalade was involved in a collision on Mississippi Highway 24, crashing into a passenger car. Several males, some reportedly wearing ski masks and carrying large firearms, were seen fleeing the scene of the wreck. Authorities have indicated a connection between this Escalade and the shooting incident on Cosby and Highland Streets.
Despite the chaotic and public nature of the events that led to Jerome G. Young's death, no arrests have been made in the case. The Centreville Police Department has continued to investigate the homicide and has urged anyone with information to come forward. Young's widow has publicly expressed her frustration with the pace of the investigation and what she describes as a lack of communication from law enforcement. The family continues to seek justice and answers in the brazen killing that took place in the small Mississippi town.
